June 1 , 2010
Dear Miller Creek Parent(s) and Families,
Summer is upon us and graduation is just days away. On behalf of the entire Miller Creek Staff, I'd like to thank everyone for their support of our school and students! It was another amazing year of learning, growth, and change! Miller Creek students displayed their talent, care, and imagination!
With California schools under pressure to "do more with less" we will rely on your continued support in the year ahead. Economic recession or not, we will continue to tackle the job of providing a learning community for your children with energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm. One way to display your support is to be a part of the CanDo! Team. CanDo! continues to provide valuable funds that enable us to employ counselors, maintain technology, support our incredible library, and enhance student activities. CanDo! Does.
Our best wishes go to several staff members moving on to new challenges and adventures. Ms. Armstrong will be the new librarian at our own Mary E. Silveira School. Ms. Tams is heading to a private school in the East Bay and the opportunity to spend more time with her young son. Ms. Harris is taking a year leave to deliver a baby, her first! Ms. MacBride will be pursuing song closer to home. We thank them for the time they've shared with us and wish them great success!
To all of our students, we wish you a relaxing and rejuvenating summer break. remember to take care of those you love, the planet, and yourselves. Read some great books, take a long hike, or create something that inspires others!
See you in August!
Regards,
Greg Johnson, Principal
"Teens Go Green" News and Recognition
On May 16th, at the Marin Youth Activist Awards Ceremony, Miller Creek students Gabby Scharlach, Alyssa Ceccanti-Harris, Lorenzo Conti, Kiera Yee received the 2010 Next Generation Award and Recognition from State Senator, Mark Leno. Miller Creek is extremely proud of their efforts on behalf of our planet.
In addition, Alyssa Cecannti-Harris and Brynna Christy have been instrumental in supporting and volunteering support for Marin's Bike to Work Day! Their commitment to helping reduce our "Carbon Footprint" is greatly appreciated!
I am happy to say that our Organic Edible Garden & Outdoor Kitchen Project will begin Phase 1 over the summer break. One of the Phase 1 components of the garden is going to be a Woolly Pocket Garden Wall. The woollys will provide our first planting and harvest for the garden this fall. We only have to raise $1000 for this component to enable our Miller Creek Students to start their first harvest. The wall includes the pocket planter, soil, compost, seeds and curriculum lessons. It is a great way to kick off the project and get involved, so please pledge.
The link provided here goes directly to the donation pledge for the Woolly Pockets for Miller Creek. You can also vote for our garden at the Pepsi Garden Page too!

Gabby Scharlach, soon to be 7th grader, who came up with the garden proposal (our muse) will be doing a blog on the garden starting with the summertime building. We will send links to the garden blog over the summer as things start to happen!

Miller Creek Middle School is a community that encourages all its members-students, staff, and parents- to be lifelong learners who embrace a healthy lifestyle, demonstrate compassion and empathy for others, and act with integrity and honesty. It is the goal of this community to provide the tools and resources necessary to foster creative, independent thinkers who will become proud stewards of our world.
Location and Community
Miller Creek Middle School is located just outside the city limits of San Rafael, California. It serves the communities of Lucas Valley, Marinwood, and Terra Linda. One of four schools in the Dixie School District, it was originally constructed in 1964. Nestled within the beautiful hills of Marin County, we have Miller Creek running behind the campus, oaks and bay trees surrounding the campus, and the historic Dixie School House at our entrance. We have over 34 classrooms, a gym, performing arts stage, band room, orchestra room, choir room, two computer centers, the world-famous Creek Cafe, and a state-of-the-art library/media center. Our school receives active and generous support from our parent community, the Dixie Children's Fund (DCF), and the Miller Creek Home and School Club. |
